Well, this was on the [e]grape[e]vine. Antifasc Fest 7pm TONIGHT
Sounds like a plan. I do wish I had more info for you - but I don't. Hmm.
"NEO-NAZIS IN FITZROY
neo-nazis harass local sudanese at the fitzroy flats...join the community to collectively say that this is not acceptable. 7pm gertrude st side of the big fitzroy commission flats.
not too sure if everyone is aware of the neo-nazis' presence around the fitzroy flats, but over many consecutive nights there have been confrontations between the neo-nazis and the Sudanese community there. residents fear their safety, and are worried that the confrontations will escalate to racially motivated stabbings, as swords and knives have been involved so far.
so, this coming friday at 7pm at the fitzroy commission flats on Gertrude st, many people are assembling to hear the concerns of the community, and to make a public stance to the media, the council, the police and the neo-nazis that this is not accepted in a multicultural australia. please invite all you want/can, bring food, drinks, activities, music, etc.
http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2007/05/144496.php"
Belated grain of table salt: after half an hour of exhaustive research, I have failed to find any more information. But slackbastard did. Oh, and I sense a tweak in the force...trot...it whispers. I'm still heading down, just to prove I don't approve of Nazis in our town, and now so can you, armed with [slightly] more knowledge. Don't say I never do nothing for you. Keeping it real!

Heard it was a firfee from a little bl@ndy bird, on Indymedia.
What was the go?
anarchists = 4 or 5
wobblies = 3 or 4
"people of middle eastern appearance" = 2
south american jungle bunnies = 1
"people of european apperance" = 6
chicks = 4
white trash heroines = 1
me = 1
fasc = 0 [or less]
not that it's a competition
but if it was we would've won
i don't know what a firfee is but the whole thing probably was an [e]grape[e]vine EXAGGERATED rumor
how do i know?
coz i was there
so we checked out a rumor & nothing much occured
so what?
it's in our neighborhood, how else will we spend our friday night?
it was good in the sense that not all of us had worked together before & now have & i was thinking later that we're getting closer to perfecting a very, very informal, low-key & quick consensus process that ACTUALLY works
oh & trots = 0 [or less than 0]
this was on the orgasn [on going g20 arestee solidarity network] list - i'm archiving it here so the children of tomorrow need not go without people to tell to fix things by agitating for more state funding.
whoever it is was right about one thing - nazi involvement was an unsubstantiated rumor.
BUT - "It is really important that in our attempts to be anti-racist, we dont automatically assume that the root cause to every thing is racism" - is a weirdarse statement in the context, given that violence in ghettos or projects in places like the US, europe, palistine, & yes, even in australia [i.e. redfern or inala] & etc are directly related to & caused by racism.
& shithouse living conditions, poverty, over-crowding, lack of sport facilities & etc are directly related to & caused by racism. boneheads are one symptom of racist violence. the above is another.
it's a secret said:
"While im obviously supportive of an anti-fascist festival, im curious as to who organised this, the reason being that no one seems to have checked with the sudanese residents as to who was actually attacking them. According to AGRA (the residents association) 'sunday's stabbing capped a week-long rampage by various gangs on the estate' (in the Melbourne Times). 4 of the 12 AGRA board (including the vice-president) are Sudanese, and they have all been calling for improvements to the conditions of the estate as a soulution to the violence; hardly a solution to neo-nazis.
BUT the POINT is the attacks havent been the work of neo-nazis, they have been (apparently) the result of tensions between vietnamese and sudanese youth gangs who are unemployed, have nothing to do on the underfunded estate, and no hopes in a racist australia that denies them any chance of a future.
It is really important that in our attempts to be anti-racist, we dont
automatically assume that the root cause to every thing is racism.
By blaming neo-nazis for violence that the victims are blamiong other people for, we are further allowing the state government to force public housing tenants to live in shithouse accomodation, rather then fix up the problems that are causing the youth alienation that results in people forming gangs because there is fuck all else for them to do, because white australia denies them a place in society. If you want to help stop the violence on the estates, perhaps (as a start) support the demands for more sporting venues on the estate, real social services to be offered (other then the jesuit funding black hole), and better funding for the estate, to help fight the causes of youth alienation.
read the comments on this particular announcement of the same action:
http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2007/05/144412_comment.php#144465
particularly the comments of steve jolly. read the melbourne times article, talk to the residents association, and actual residents. fight racism, but also fight the probelems of poverty that are causing this shit to happen, dont just blame neo-nazi gangs (unless people are calling gangs of alienated vietnamese youths 'neo-nazis').
Oh, and the Sudanese residents aren't actually saying its the fault of the Vietnemese residents, either. AGRA (which has both vietnamese and sudanese representatives) are blaming the lack of services and underfunded estate, and high youth unemployment. This, at least, is one positive to see in the situation, that both groups (as a whole) are still united against the lack of government funding, and not letting the current situation break that unity.
sorry for the ranty style, in a rush..."
the indymedia link
oh & for the record - there was no evidence of "many people are assembling to hear the concerns of the community, and to make a public stance to the media, the council, the police and the neo-nazis that this is not accepted in a multicultural australia. please invite all you want/can, bring food, drinks, activities, music, etc."
at all!
Typo
Firfie = false arguement
Used as a comment that is was a false reason to attend.
If positive stuff arose from it all: GOOD.
Looks like even the bl@nd one was wrong.
I'll never believe anyting I read on the 'net again; even this... :)
Sounds like the AGRA people have a firm grip on it all, sorry I didn't attend, after all.
(:þ)
no @ndy was right - it was a rumor - but nothing ventured i forget how the rest goes - also i've chased wilder rumors than that...
Also on numbers @ this there WAS 1 Trot & 1 socialist plus a heap of insurrectionists....
making a total of 80!
It's called a Furphy. Gawd.

"Hey all,
I think this is pretty important to reflect on. Doing anti-racist stuff without actually talking to those affected is problematic. I was actually visiting mates in those flats on Friday night, had the weird experience of a white guy stopping me and my mate who I was walking back from the pub with, and being asked if we had witnessed any racial violence - I'm assuming he asked us because my mate is not a whitey. The way he approached us made my mate instinctively put his arm around me and pull me away from the guy, because I think he thought this man was going to attack us - it was pretty bizarre.
What was this about? Randomly stopping non-white crew on the street and taking a poll? Whilst drunk (cos I think this guy was)? All it achieved was actually scaring my friend, who was in town visiting mates of his who, like himself, used to be incarcerated at Phillip Ruddock's insistence. Which brings me back to the point of organising stuff with those most directly affected - there's not a lot my mates formerly incarcerated in desert detention centres don't know or haven't tried in organising against even the most brutal and systematic manifestations of racism and attempts at class division. I'm sure they'd like to be involved in organising against racism. I don't know that I'd express the inter-class violence on the estate as not being related to racism - I assume that you mean that we should avoid organising against racism in a way that mystifies the causes of it (ie the structural and economic reasons for inter-class violence on the estate), or in a way that sidelines those who are experiencing the real affects of it.
I definitely support that over aggressive push-polling on the streets by well-meaning whiteys.... I'm sure whoever it was meant well...
Solidarity abstracted from supporting the self-organisation of people fucked over by capitalism gets into the horrible well-meaning whitey territory of the charity and aid industries. And that's slippage that could find you waking up one morning and wondering how you ended up working for Oxfam.... And friends don't let friends end up like that...."
i'm still archiving it for future generations to briefly skim thru
